'I called the book Respect for Acting. I did not call the book “delight in acting” or
“the fun of acting.” I don’t care about that. I care about work and responsibility
and the truth and commitment.'
'I can’t fathom why actors agree to allow their profession to be called a “craft.”
An actor playing Benvolio has a hell of a lot more to do with the success or failure of
a performance of Romeo & Juliet than a third violist has to do with the success or failure
of the ballet of Romeo & Juliet. But a violist would never, ever say that being a musician
was a “craft.” It’s an art. Period. Full stop. So is acting.'
