Geoffrey HylandGeoffrey Hyland, Associate Teacher

Geoff has studied and directed both in South Africa and Canada and currently lectures at the University of Cape Town’s Drama Department, South Africa. He has been nominated for several national and regional awards for acting and especially directing, receiving, amongst others, the Fleur du Cap Award for Young Directors and also the Standard Bank Young Artist Award. He has directed close to 90 theatre productions in his career, including dance, opera and cabaret. Some highlights include Madame de Sade, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Women Beware Women, A Night in November, Masque: An African Opera, Kissed By Brel, The Yellow Wallpaper, a dance and a theatre production of Blood Wedding, as well as Othello, Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, As You Like It and Twelfth Night.
    Geoff’s teaching is focused on acting and directing technique. In his current practice he makes extensive use of David Rotenberg’s acting terminology and methods, employing these specifically in the area of heightened text and acting in extension. He has also explored these methodologies in the area of dance and opera performance.
